Canto bello: Song in Italy from c. 1480-1540.

Hector Sequera (lute), Penelope Appleyard (soprano), and Susanna Pell (viol) bring us a programme of music popular in Italy from around 1480-1540 (e.g. frottole, madrigals and chansons, dances, ricercare, etc). The journey will take us from the beautiful sounds of a Benedictus a3 by Isaac to the Italian oral tradition of monodic song, and all the way to the madrigals of Philippe Verdelot (one of the pioneers of the madrigal and a favourite composer of the Medici family). The performance context is that of a frottolista, a singer/lute player, together with his tenorista (providing melodic invention on the viol). The songs are mixed with lute solos and virtuoso viol divisions.

Concert Hall, Department of Music, Palace Green, Durham University DH1 3RL. Thursday 18 June, 7:30pm. Free admission. This event is sponsored by the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies (IMEMS).
