Durham University Chamber Orchestra
Finzi: Romance for String Orchestra
Schoenberg: Chamber Symphony No.2
John Reddel – conductor
Durham University Symphony Orchestra
Mahler: Symphony No.1
Alex Mackinder – conductor
John Reddel and the Chamber Orchestra’s string section begin the concert with the Finzi, allowing them to show off their warmth and sonority through the light-hearted yet nostalgic Romance. Following this, they are joined by the rest of the Chamber Orchestra for Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No. 2. The intricate texture allows great clarity which brings the individuality of the performers to the fore as they weave this unusual tapestry.
Mahler’s Symphony No. 1. begins with an evocation of nature and progresses through a number of folk tunes, including a funereal Frère Jacques introduced by the double-basses, before the final movement’s opening lets loose a colossal outburst of despair, which by the ending of the work has transformed into a glorious expression of triumph, with the help of an eight-strong horn section and two sets of timpani, – a fitting climax for the graduating members playing in their last concert with the Orchestral Society.
