DUOS – Shostakovich & Smetana

Sat 25 Nov 2017 , 7:30 pm

| £8

Shostakovich: Festive Overture
Smetana: ‘Vlatava’ from Ma Vlast
Reinecke: Flute Concerto (soloist Ellie Holland)
Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5

Durham University Symphony Orchestra begin their 2017/18 season with a bang, opening with Shostakovich’s joyful Festive Overture, written in 1954 to commemorate the anniversary of the October Revolution. Smetana’s ‘Vltava’ paints an idyllic picture of the Czech river, and Reinecke’s delightful flute concerto showcases the talents of one of the university’s soloists.

Shostakovich’s Fifth symphony, written in response to Stalin’s criticism has always been an enigma, and can be read as triumphal, or defiant, or satirical. Find out which approach DUOS choose…

Tickets £8 / students £6, available from Durham University Music Society via the link below, or on the door.
