ETO: Dido & Aeneas triple bill
Mon 22 Oct , 7:30 pm| £26
English Touring Opera perform a unique triptych of one-act baroque masterpieces, in a production inspired by the nighttime worlds of the seventeenth century:
Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas is a classic of the opera stage, and tells the story of Queen Dido’s tragic passion for Aeneas, ending with the devastating lament ‘When I am laid in earth’.
Jonas is a new creation by dancer/director Bernadette Iglich which uses the sensuous music written by the Italian composer Giacomo Carissimi for a musical retelling of the story of Jonah and the whale.
Carlos Gesualdo is famous for his turbulent love life, culminating in the murder of his wife and her lover, and for his astonishingly sensual and expressive harmonies. Eight singers and eight players will perform some of his most intense madrigals in a landscape of shadows and candle-light.
