ETO: Giulio Cesare part 1: The Death of Pompey
Mon 23 Oct 2017 , 7:30 pm| £26
Giulio Cesare is undoubtedly one of Handel’s greatest operas, and to do it full justice, English Touring Opera are performing it uncut, across two nights. The story follows the events surrounding Julius Caesar in Egypt – his power struggles with Pompey and the Ptolomey family, and his passionate love for Cleopatra. The story gives Handel the opportunity to explore the human spirit through emotionally penetrative music and dazzlingly passionate arias.
In part one, Caesar has defeated his rival Pompey, but can he now survive the machinations of King of Egypt Ptolemy and his sister Cleopatra?
James Conway’s new production for English Touring Opera is sung in Italian with English titles, and accompanied by the Old Street Band period instrument orchestra. The cast is led by counter-tenor Christopher Ainslie in the role of Caesar, and soprano Soraya Mafi as Cleopatra.
Tickets £26 (£24.50 concessions) from Gala Theatre Durham 03000 266600 or online via the link from ETO website – see below.
