ETO: Handel – Radamisto
Tue 23 Oct , 7:30 pm| £26
When Handel’s opera Radamisto opened in London in 1720, it was so hotly anticipated that the crowds reportedly lost all dignity and politeness in the crush, some forced their way in, ladies fainted in the heat, and people were turned away despite offering sums way over the published ticket price. It apparently lived up to the hype, becoming a massive hit, particularly the aria Ombra Cara, but these days has become something of a rarity.
James Conway’s new production for English Touring Opera draws on the art of the opera’s setting in ancient Armenia for this tale of faithfulness and married love set against moral depravity and intolerance.
