Wagner: Overture to Tannhäuser
Sibelius: Violin Concerto
Brahms: Symphony No 4 in E minor
Soloist: Anna-Liisa Bezrodny (violin)
Conductor Timothy Henty
Following her captivating performance of Brahms’s violin concerto with Orchestra North East in 2013, violinist Anna-Liisa Bezrodny returns to Durham, this time bringing a glimpse into her Finnish background as she plays Sibelius’s violin concerto. This was the only concerto Sibelius wrote; its full orchestration recalls his symphonic writing, whilst the violin part is not only one of the most technically dazzling concertos in the repertoire but also rich in Sibelius’s characteristic lyricism.
Orchestra North East turn to German romanticism for the remainder of their programme. Wagner’s Tannhäuser overture evokes the battle between earthly and spiritual pleasure that is played out in the course of the opera, with the famous pilgrims’ march theme prominent throughout. Brahms’s fourth symphony is richly complex, full of brooding intensity, from the heart-wrenching sobs of the opening to the majestic set of variations that bring it to its dark ending.
