Opera dei Lumi: Messiah
Sun 16 Dec 2018 , 3:00 pm
| £13Event Navigation
Opera dei Lumi shed new light on one of the best-loved pieces of the choral repertoire, Handel’s Messiah. Handel revised the work a number of times, sometimes re-writing or rearranging arias for different soloists. In 1750, he began what became an annual tradition of performing the work at London’s Foundling Hospital as a charity fundraiser, and it’s this stage in the development of Messiah that Opera dei Lumi bring to this year’s performance. This is the point at which the alto aria – “Who may abide” reached it’s virtuosic final version, re-written for the super-star castrato Gaetano Guadagni.
Conducted by Peter Keenan, with period instrument orchestra and Opera dei Lumi’s ensemble of young professional singers.
