No-one should ever miss a concert because they didn’t know it was happening
Opera North: Arya
Thu 5 Mar , 7:30 pm| £18
A rare opportunity to hear the Orchestra and Chorus of Opera North conducted by Harish Shankar in Durham Cathedral, performing an unusual new work that brings together Western and Indian musical traditions. In this new concerto, by composer and sitar virtuoso Jasdeep Singh Degun, the complex rhythms and gorgeous melodies of Indian classical raag strike up conversations with the orchestra, as the sitar by turns draws in, creates quickfire exchange with and finally comes harmoniously together with the orchestra.
The concerto is paired with the full force of the Chorus of Opera North, whose programme includes the delicately beautiful Humming Chorus from Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, the exquisite Lament from Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, extracts from Verdi’s La traviata and Mozart’s The magic flute, and concludes with Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music
Verdi – Prelude to La Traviata
Mozart – Priests’ Chorus from The Magic Flute
Purcell – Dido’s Lament and chorus ‘With drooping wings’
Puccini – Humming Chorus from Madama Butterfly
Sibelius – The Swan of Tuonela
Vaughan Williams – Serenade to Music
Jasdeep Singh Degun – Arya
