A Winter’s Night – The Birth of Christ
Following last year’s Christmas concert on the theme of ‘Through Advent to Christmas Day’, the Durham Singers progress to the moment of ‘The Birth of Christ’, an event that has inspired composers for centuries and continues to do so.
Alongside audience carols, there are varying contemporary and 20th century reflections on Jesus’s birth; some are deeply personal and intimate while others express the great joy of Christmas, and includes Cecilia McDowall A Winter’s Night, which reworks well-known carols; Morten Lauridsen’s modern Christmas classic O Magnum Mysterium; Kerensa Briggs’ A Tender Shoot, William Walton’s All this Time, Herbert Howells Here is the Little Door and Alison Willis There is no Rose.
