DUOS Stanford, Smith & Coleridge Taylor
DUOS Stanford, Smith & Coleridge Taylor

Ethel Smyth – Overture The Wreckers
Charles Villiers Stanford
Cello concerto in D minor (soloist Richard Jenkinson)
Incidental music to ‘Becket’
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor – Symphonic Variations on an African Air
Conductor: Monty Milner
Soprano: Alex Milne, Baritone: Tom Parker
DUOS offer a fascinating programme of little-known British symphonic music, including Stanford’s incidental music to Tennyson’s play ‘Becket’, a piece not performed for over a century, and to be heard now thanks to the research of Professor Jeremy Dibble, alongside Stanford’s virtuosic cello concerto . The overture to Ethel Symth’s opera The Wreckers gives a taster of this powerful psychological drama set in a remote Cornish fishing community. Like Ethel Smyth, Samuel-Coleridge Taylor’s music is undergoing a much deserved revival, and the concert ends with his sublime Variations on an African Air.
