Domenico Scarlatti: Stabat Mater
Herbert Howells Requiem
Durham Cathedral Consort of Singers begin Lent with two choral works that are very different in style but which are linked in their depth of expression of grief and loss. Scarlatti’s setting of the Stabat Mater for 12 voices vividly depicts Mary’s grief in the ache of its twisting musical lines. Herbert Howells’s Requiem takes Latin texts from the traditional Mass of the Dead but mixes them with psalms in English to find consolation and was linked to the tragic death of the composer’s young son.
This short concert will take place in the Chapel of the Nine Altars. Free entry, with a retiring collection, followed by a reception. No booking required.
