Music in Durham

Tidings of Joy

In celebration of the Christmas season, Durham Cathedral’s choirs sing some of the best-loved carols and tell the story of Christmas through words and music

The evening begins in darkness as the sounds of drums and song ring out from the distance and the cathedral choirs move through the darkness bringing tidings of joy. The three choirs of Durham Cathedral – Durham Cathedral Choir, the voluntary Cathedral Consort of Singers, and the outreach choir, Cathedral Young Singers perform together, concluding with Ralph Vaughan Williams’s stirring Fantasia on Christmas Carols.

The choirs are also joined by local actor, Charlie Hardwick of Emmerdale to tell the story of Christmas in spoken word and poetry, including classic favourites from Charles Dickens and John Rutter and a rendition of the Twelve Days of Christmas intermingled with John Julius Norwich’s The Twelve Days of Christmas Correspondence, a hilarious reimagining of the famous carol.
