Royal Northern Sinfonia’s second concert in this year’s MUSICON series starts with the sounds of a hot, sticky summer evening, a sweltering intensity that we might be yearning for in the depths of January. That’s a complete contrast with John Adams’ Shaker Loops – shimmering, ever changing, high voltage and tense. Korngold’s suite weaves a story and showcases the beauty of the violin perfectly and then Appalachian Spring closes the concert, evoking the wide open big skies of America with folk inspired melodies and a sense of calm positivity.
