Awake O North Wind

Contemporary British and Baltic choral music performed by Durham University Chamber Choir, directed by Adam Whitmore. ‘Awake, O North Wind’ begins in the Baltics with music by contemporary composers in English, Latin, German and Russian that reflects the traditions of their orthodox predecessors. Moving outwards from the Baltics, the programme offers the intricacy of Russian composer Alfred Schnittke’s style and the dense choral tapestry offered by the Finn Jaakko Mäntyjärvi,

The programme concludes with the rarely performed setting of the Song of Songs by British composer John Barber, which utilises his characteristic rhythmically diverse work and close attention to the text, capturing emotional moments beautifully, leading to the emphatic closing movement, ‘Love is as Strong as Death’.
