Bruckner’s Second Mass is based on traditional plainchant and on the choral music of the Renaissance, with the polyphonic texture supported by wind instruments, melding seamlessly with the voices. The work was first performed outdoors and it is suggested that the unusual scoring helped the sound to carry. Uplifting and majestic, the music spans quiet thoughtfulness and full-throated celebration.
The Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia also perform choral music with a nocturnal theme, showing the full range of the human voice and including arrangements of solo songs by Fanny Hensel and Robert Schumann.
