Durham University Orchestral Society presents a dramatic programme exploring folklore and mythology. Imogen Holst’s Persephone depicts the ancient Greek myth of Persephone’s transition from life on earth as goddess of spring to her sinister descent into the underworld. Maurice Ravel’s La Valse was written as a tribute to Johann Strauss II and the grand tradition of the Viennese waltz, and depicts the birth, growth and decline of this Romantic dancing style. The concert concludes with Antonín Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony, a joyful celebration of the Bohemian countryside, bringing symphonic forces to Czech folk music.
