Music in Durham

From Dusk ’til Dawn

Durham Choral Society and Orchestra travel through the night with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s ever-popular Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and Schubert’s Mass No 2 in G and the world then re-awakens with The Sunrise Mass by Ola Gjeilo.

The programme also travels through the centuries, contrasting the styles of the classical, romantic and contemporary eras. In classical style, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik was composed in 1787 but not published until 1837. Schubert also worked in the classical style and, along with Beethoven, heralded romanticism. He composed his Mass in G in 1815, he later developed the work further and it was not printed until 1845. The grander version with full orchestra was discovered only in the 1980s. Bringing us into the 21st century, The Sunrise Mass was composed in 2008 and is partly influenced by film scores.
