The Durham University Palatinate Orchestra presents a programme spanning the rich musical and cultural traditions of Europe and America. William Walton’s Richard III Suite, written for a film version starring Lawrence Olivier, brings Shakespeare’s tragic king to life through dramatic and turbulent orchestral writing. Edward Elgar’s ‘Three Bavarian Dances’ evoke the colours, dances and landscapes of southern Germany. Cecile Chaminade’s ‘Flute Concertino’ is the composer’s orchestration of a work originally written as an examination piece for the Paris Conservatoire. Dvořák’s much loved Ninth Symphony, ‘From the New World’, blends his Czech musical heritage with the sounds and influences of America
