King Arthur
Dunelm Consort and Players present a lively celebration of Arthurian legend and pagan folklore in a semi-staged production Henry Purcell’s King Arthur in which Saxons and Britons battle for honour, glory and the chance to secure a place in history.
Wizards and nymphs, spirits and satyrs, soldiers and shepherds, gods and men take to the stage, as supernatural powers meddle in the earthly disputes of the Britons. Far from the familiar round table of Camelot, the opera depicts King Arthur’s efforts to rescue his wife Emmeline from the heathen Saxon king of Kent, Oswald; enriched by Purcell’s vibrant battle scenes, touching love songs, pastoral merrymaking, rowdy drinking choruses, and moving meditations on the beauty of Britain, including the beautiful aria ‘Fairest Isle’.
Conducted by Barney Howard and narrated by Michael Hampel. Note the start time is 8.30pm
