The North East’s two finest chamber choirs,  Northern Spirit Singers from Durham and Voices of Hope from Newcastle, join forces as part of Durham Vocal Festival 2026. Frank Martin’s unaccompanied Mass for Double Choir was written in the 1920s and fuses a traditional sacred style with a 20th century idiom.

The programme also includes two very different pieces of secular choral music by Johannes Brahms: a selection of his playful and witty Liebeslieder Waltzes and Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny), a dramatically charged setting of words by Friedrich Hölderlin that offer a secular reflection on death, contrasting the quiet bliss of departed souls with the turbulence of earthly life.
