An Evening with Will Todd

Jazz Missa Brevis
Selection from All will be well
Passion Music

An evening celebrating the work of Will Todd, who grew up in Durham and is now one of the country’s most celebrated composers, renowned for bringing jazz and blues  into traditional liturgical settings. Durham Choral Society are joined by the award-winning Newcastle chamber choir Voices of Hope; members of Newcastle’s Strictly Smokin’ Big Band, vocalist Alice Grace and the composer himself on piano.

The Jazz Missa Brevis (2015) combines traditional Latin Mass texts with a variety of jazz styles. Voices of Hope will then perform a set from their 2025 album of Todd’s works, All Will Be Well, which brings a hopeful outlook to our relationship with living things and the planet we inhabit.

The second half of the concert, Passion Music (2018), is a large-scale choral work that is a masterful fusion of jazz, gospel and classical choral styles. It draws on hymns and gospel quotations in a highly expressive modern approach to the Passion of Christ.
