Inspired by the Old Testament story of a prophet who stands up to the heathen Queen Jezebel Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah takes in a battle of Old Testament gods and  storms, a fiery chariot and also music of deep consolation and faith.

Mendelssohn championed the baroque oratorios of Bach and Handel, and his own choral masterpieces combine their drama and colour with the emotional and expressive qualities of the early-romantic.
