Liszt’s Rhapsody and other legends
An evening of rhapsodies with Durham University Palatinate Orchestra’s Symphony Orchestra conducted by Anthony Sutch.
Overture The Barber of Seville, Giacomo Rossini
Ballade for Orchestra, Alexander Glazunov
Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, Franz Liszt
Lemminkäinen Suite Jean Sibelius
Passion, orchestral marvel and symphonic storytelling, beginning with the sparking wit and charm of Rossini’s overture to ‘Barber of Seville Overture’ and Glazunov’s richly evocative ‘Ballade for Orchestra’. The centrepiece of the concert is Liszt’s ‘Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2’, in its fiery orchestral guise, is full of drama and orchestral fireworks and the evening ends with Sibelius’s ‘Lemminkäinen Suite’, drawn from the Finnish Kalevala stories. The suite includes the haunting ‘Swan of Tuonela’, and ends in a sweeping heroic finale.
