Handel’s Messiah
When Charles Jennens compiled a carefully chosen selection of Biblical texts for Handel to set to music, he wrote ‘..the Subject excells every other Subject. The Subject is Messiah …’. The resulting oratorio excelled all others too and Handel’s Messiah is performed thousands of times every year around the world at Christmas and Easter.
This year as the church calendar moves beyond Christmas and looks towards Lent, Durham Cathedral Choir perform Handel’s masterpiece with the glorious sound of period instruments played by the Avison Ensemble and with present and former choristers providing the solos.
Front nave £25, rear nave £20 (plus booking fees).
