Ṣim ‘Alenu Shalom | Dona Nobis Pacem

Leonard Bernstein Chichester Psalms
Ralph Vaughan Williams Dona Nobis Pacem
Oliver Tarney Canticle of Elizabeth

With soloists Lara Marie Müller (soprano) and Patrick Owston (baritone) and members of the Newcastle Youth Choir Project

Durham Singers directed by Tom Edney are joined by an orchestra of local musicians in a concert that challenges our perceptions of conflicts past and present and encourages individuals to search for peace.

The programme explores the theme of global and individual peace in sacred and secular music. Leonard Bernstein wanted to bring people together regardless of religion, origin, generation and aspiration in life. Ralph Vaughan Williams was a regliously infused agnostic who experienced the brutality of war first hand as a stretcher bearer during World War I and offers a plea for peace from war setting texts by Walt Whitman, John Bright and Old Testament prophets against the ‘Dona nobis pacem’ from the Agnus Dei.

Oliver Tarney is concerned with personal reconciliation and the concert will include the world première performance of Tarney’s Canticle for Elizabeth setting words by Lucia Quinault.
