Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 in B minor, known as the ‘Pathétique’ is a work of profound emotional intensity, suggesting love, fate, tragedy and ending in the darkest despair. The composer never revealed the narrative behind the symphony and died in mysterious circumstances just 9 days after its premiere.
Edward Elgar’s ‘In the South’ offers a sweeping and vivid musical tour of an Italian landscape and the concert opens with Dora Pejačević’s vibrant and colourful ‘Overture’.
