Handel – Zadok the Priest

For Mothering Sunday, it's my Mum's choice on the happiness playlist – Handel's Coronation Anthem 'Zadok the Priest'.

Because it’s Mothering Sunday, today’s choice of happy music comes from my mother. She and I have both always loved this piece, and I’ve sung it many times, including in the Royal Albert Hall and Durham Cathedral, but it was also on the programme the first time I ever sang with an orchestra, in a concert our church choir gave with a visiting orchestra from Hemel Hempstead. So when I asked her to choose a piece of music for this series Mum wrote:

‘Please can I put in a request for Zadok? One of the memories that will always be with me is when you sang it at Dorford with St P’s choir and it always brings a smile. It feels like being eight years old again and writing to have something included in Children’s Favourites (compulsory Saturday morning listening), I never was successful so making up for the disappointment of all those years ago is a double reason to smile’
